About Concerto a Tromba principale (1803)

The color facsimile of Hummel's Trumpet Concerto

Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s trumpet concerto, which has occupied a secure place in the repertoire since the late 1960s, was written for the Viennese keyed trumpet virtuoso, Anton Weidinger (1766-1852), the dedicatee of Haydn’s concerto in 1796.

It's like holding a piece of music history in our hands

First page of the manuscript of the Hummel concerto The word “Concerto” in the title and the orchestral parts were written with ink no. 1, the words “a Tromba principale” in the title and the remark at the bottom of the page concerning the composer and his position with Prince Esterbázy with ink no. 2.
Hummel, Concerto a tromba principale - page 10

The entire solo part was probably written by Hummel himself, with a darker ink.
Hummel, Concerto a tromba principale - page 51

Page 51 of the manuscript, on which Cut No. 2 is to be seen on an extra leaf turned to the left. This cut, too, was notated with ink no. 3. With this cut, measures 37-40 were replaced by just one. In this latter measure the single note c´´ appears an octave too high – just like all the notes in Cut No. 1.
