Vartan Adjemian was born 1956 to a very well-known and popular family in Armenia.

His grandfather, Vartan Adjemian Sr. (1905-1977) studied with Stanislavsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold and was the General Stage Director of the National Theatre of Armenia and his grandmother was Arus Asryan (1904-1987), one of the leading actress of the same institution.

His father, Alexander Adjemian (1925-1987), was a composer, author of seven symphonies, chamber works and songs. All were officially designated as People's Artists of Armenia.

Vartan Adjemian studied composition with Lazarus Saryan (1920-1998) at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory from 1973 to 1981. In 1987, he received the National Prize of Armenia for his Symphony No. 1. He has written many orchestral, chamber, vocal, and instrumental music as well as for piano.

He is regarded as being one of the most gifted composers of his generation whose works are successfully performed worldwide.
