Five Miniatures for Solo Trombone is a piece that highlights both the technical agility and the lyrical, expressive qualities of the trombone. Composed for James Miller, the work is structured in five contrasting movements: three fast and virtuosic, interspersed with two slower, more lyrical sections.
Each miniature has its own distinct character, yet they are all connected thematically. The final coda of the fifth movement brings the piece full circle by recalling the opening statement.
