Stimulating and entertaining

The Clarinet Outings series are conceived to familiarize clarinet players of all levels with a large musical horizont. These books provide original etudes and duets inspired by various composers and styles which mark out music history: from Renaissance to Debussy, from Mozart to Carlos Jobim, via Schoenberg, Steve Reich, Jazz, Celts and other folk music. Each tunes is presented with an introduction text. Accompaniments provide demo and play along tracks.

Caprice

Caprice

A caprice is simply a piece in a free, irregular style, almost like an improvisation. The mood here is rather playful and aloof, with just a bit of reflective contrast at measures 12-21. Follow the articulations closely.

Short Tarantella

Short Tarantella

A tarantella is a lively Italian country dance that was originally supposed to cure a spider's bite. This one is a bit more contemporary, but the spirit is the same.
Short Tarantella
Charles Reskin cleverly combines stimulation and entertainment, humor and emotion, with professionalism and pedagogy. An excellent preparation to the repertory.
Rather Bizet

Rather Bizet

Here's an outing in the style of Georges Bizet (1838-1875), one of France's great composers. He wrote the opera Carmen, the most popular opera ever written. Sadly, he died at the age of 37, as his fame was just beginning to spread.
Rather Bizet
Rivulets

Rivulets

Rivulets are those tiny rivers of water that flow downhill after a rainstorm. There are quite a few piecesin classical music where instruments are used to depict flowing water. Listen to Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2 by Maurice Ravel. The opening has the flutes and clarinets evoking the sound of babblingbrooks and waterfalls at dawn. Keep the lines very legato and - liquid!

Toccata

Toccata

A toccata is a piece that shows off your technique and agility. The name comes from the Italian word toccare, meaning to touch, because it was originally a piece for keyboard instruments.

A la Brahms

A la Brahms

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was one of the famous Three B's, along with Bach and Beethoven. His style is Romantic, but rooted in the forms of the Classical era. Here's a short outing which demonstrates this idea.

Igor And Bela

Igor and Béla

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) and Béla Bartók (1881-1945) were arguably the two greatest composers of the 20th century. Their styles were pretty different, but sometimes they came close. Here's an imaginary outing with these two monsters...

Neo Classic Outing

Neo-classic Outing

"Neoclassicism" is another musical style from the 20th century. Simply put, neo-classic ("new classic") music uses older musical forms and styles, but adds elements from more contemporary music, such as changing time signatures, modern harmonies, etc. Prokofiev, Stravinsky and others often used this idea.

Pavane

Pavane

The Pavan was an ancient dance form from the 16th and 17th centuries. Several more modern composers took the name and created pieces that vary in speed and style. The most famous is Maurice Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte," but there are also pavanes by Fauré and others.
