Richard Lane (1933-2004)
This Sonata for two flutes and piano was, most likely, never performed during the composer’s life time. Richard Lane often wrote for and dedicated works to particular musicians simply as an indication of his respect and admiration for their artistry. In some instances, the dedicatees were unaware that the works had been written since he didn't send them copies. Indeed, Ingrid Dingfelder (dedicatee of the Sonata No. 3 for flute and piano - BIM FL35, which she premiered in 1972), was surprised to discover this work and writes:
“I have immersed myself and read all parts of this Sonata. It is truly a gem. Dick (as his friends called him) lets every voice shine, with every musician having an equal say, or ‘voice’. Richard Lane’s music is very ‘listener friendly’ and accessible, traditional in many ways. I find myself singing the lovely romantic them of the second movement introduced by the piano and shared by both flutes at the given time. Lane is masterful using motives to weave his canvas.” [I.D. January 2010]
